When was Historic Haywood Park Hotel built?
The building now home to Haywood Park Hotel was completed in 1923, originally constructed as the flagship location for The Bon Marché, Asheville's longest-running department store. Developed by E.W. Grove (yes, that Grove — of Grove Park Inn and Grove Arcade fame), the building was designed by W.L. Stoddart, a notable hotel architect behind the Battery Park and Vanderbilt Hotels.
The Bon Marché — founded in the 1890s by Solomon Lipinsky, a prominent Asheville businessman — was a local institution for nearly 90 years, known for its elegant fashion and department store innovation. The store's name came from Le Bon Marché in Paris, one of the world's first department stores, and translates to "the good deal" or "the good market."
When Bon Marché moved across the street in 1937, the building was taken over by Ivey's Department Store, another downtown staple through the mid-20th century.
In the 1980s, much of the building's mid-century clutter was removed, and by 1988, the space was transformed into what you see today — a luxury boutique hotel with original architectural charm, upscale suites, and a front-row seat to Asheville history. Haywood Park Hotel is proudly recognized as a member of Historic Hotels of America.
